By enabling cloud native back ends to run on operational edges, Wasm allows us to deploy business logic closer to users or data, even to places Kubernetes and containers can't go.

ARLINGTON, Virginia. May 23, 2023. Cosmonic, creator of the Cosmonic WebAssembly (Wasm) PaaS and active contributor to CNCF sandbox project wasmCloud, has open sourced Netreap, an application designed to allow the deployment of Cilium as a container network interface (CNI), outside of Kubernetes, in HashiCorp Nomad workloads. The move brings Isovalent Cilium (a CNCF incubation project) together with Nomad to create the ideal toolset for running WebAssembly (Wasm) applications in multiple clouds, on bare metal and on the smallest devices at the far network edge.
As I wrote in The New Stack, one of the fastest-growing Cloud Native trends of 2021 is the adoption of WebAssembly (Wasm). With distributed application runtimes like wasmCloud (a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project we donated this summer) we see WebAssembly appearing on the server and the edge. This in turn addresses the myriad set of challenges hindering distributed application development, deployment, and maintenance.
The reasons behind the surge are broad and driven by CPU diversity, multiple operating environments, security, distributed application architecture, and scalability, all of which transcend deployments into a single public cloud provider.
